Ice Harvest

Ice is cut with a chainsaw and pulled out by ice tongs.

he ice slabs are then cut down to block size

The ice is loaded into the sleigh and taken to the ice shack.

Many hands and a festive attitude help make the job easier.

The ice that was harvested will keep until next winter in the ice shack.

The ice slabs were 50% good hard ice and 50% granular.

The granular ice was returned to the hole and will be frozen by morning.

This is an eco friendly way to keep food cool in the summer. We use the ice in our fish coolers to insure freshness, we use the ice to keep the bevvies cold and our food supplies. I dont want to run a generator so that I can have a fridge. That seems senseless.

The ice shack is about 12x12 and the walls are a foot and a half thick, insulated with sawdust. The ice blocks are piled in the shack, and more sawdust is put on top. With this method. the ice will keep all spring/summer and well into fall.

The Truck Motel

Thank you friends and loved ones. I caused quite a stir. I was driving a friend home last night and we got stuck on a remote road. My family was expecting me to return by midnight and we had no way to communicate. The storm picked up considerably so my buddy Alex and I had to sleep in my truck. In the morning, he set out walking to find help and ended up walking about 8km. In the meantime, I stayed with the truck and met up with someone who pulled me out of the ditch. Sue and my buddy Pete headed out this morning to find us, and Deb filed a missing persons. My buddy Alex walked and got help, the police came and ditched their 4x4. We headed out and couldnt make a hill and had to hang for a while. I was expecting to spend yet another night in the truck. In the meantime, the police had dispatched a tow truck for their woes. The tow truck created enough of a track, and we were all able to leave at the same time, in convoy. We just got in the door and I have so many apologies to make. I also really appreciate how concerned people were for my well being. For the first time in my life, I was reported as missing. While I am not allowed to make a habit of this, I am now reflecting on all the positives...and did I say, glad to be home.

I Have an Idea

So way leads to way and the next thing you know is I have an idea. In true manic form I am exploring and frolicking in my idea. I had made a painting. I liked certain components and so I digitally edited my image. I turned things around and re-created the painting. I ran it to print and then cut out the template to use on others. Its going to be like a print run, but each one is hand painted and a little different. Paint doesn't dry fast enough! So now I am frantically looking for more backgrounds so I can continue. The first five were on various sizes of red canvas. I think I am going to make 4 more on card stock and see how that looks. My idea is accompanied by a dream and a vision and all sorts of fanfair in my head. I've already lived an event that is yet to happen. I am just so excited I cant stand it. Blue, Green, Yellow, Black..thats all I need. The story tells itself. Its a thing of beauty and love....and then I'm gonna give them all away....pooof...gone...cast to the cosmos.....looks like I have some dry paint...gotta go......................

The Thunder Box

Checking the THUNDER BOX.

There are many thunderboxes scattered throughout canoe country.

This thunderbox is at a remote campsite on an island.

It sure helps to keep the sites clean and smell free.

Alex figures this one will have to be moved again.

The first time I saw a thunder box, I was on a solo trip. I had been holding it but decided it was time. I took a little walk from base camp and stumbled on one of these. I wasnt entirely sure what it was, but as I got closer instinct took over. It was a beautiful thing.

There are many volunteers who help keep remote trails open and free of debris. There are many people who care about this beautiful and pristine land. There are many people who rely on this land for their mental and physical well being.....I am one.

The fires raged in Morleys Kakepetum land this year. I watched on the Ministry web site as daily new fires were added to the list. This was my impression of a forest fire event. Much destruction, yet creates much new life in its wake. The landscape and forest ebbs and flows. You can see past events many years later, manifesting themselves in new ways. Powerfully destructive, yet an important part of this magnificent creation. Some die, that others may live.

My wife was a little dissappointed because she thought the "heart face" was angry. Well the heart face is angry. Well perhaps anger isnt the word....perhaps upset or dissappointed....NO, actually anger is the word. I get angry about it. I get angry at how we can use blessings of love and peace against others. Love and Peace get intermingled with personal selfishness and gain and the next thing you know Love becomes a stick and a tool. The wonderful cross gets used to gouge peoples eyes out. The rainbow becomes a noose by which to hang people. The challace gets used to drown people and the fish? That gets used in fish slapping.

I just got off the phone with my first girlfriend. Her father just passed away. She was re-counting the fact that they never went to church for a few years. The reason? People in the congregation didnt want to listen to the "zoo". Last week her brother brought his young one to the service and then had to live with the noise complaint. People piss me off. I want to hug that child and hold him up. Listen to the cry...its the cry of life. Listen to the chatter..its the chatter of meaningful existence. Listen to the noise because when the noise falls silent..its all over. You say you want children to have faith, yet you dont want to see or hear the child. Suck it up.

When you hear a child cry, your heart and soul must nurture. When you hear a child laugh, your heart and soul must rejoice. When you hear a child you must look to the creator in thanksgiving and love and then scoop that little gaffer up and hug as if all humanity depends on it. If you dare say to me..shut that kid up...then I will know your heart has gone cold and this church thing is just a club to you. Shame. Go ahead and enjoy those empty blessings in reverence and feel the darkness set into your soul. Go ahead...keep the club..I dont want it and I dont need it. Perhaps our children are safer without these weapons?

Turn your heart to love and the creators intent. Catch the spirit and live. These symbols were meant as reminders, not weapons.

This is the first snow experience for Geddy.

I like cats. I like their independence. I laughed my butt off watching Meet the Parents. I am amazed at how much they sleep. Do you like cats or dogs?..or both?

We had a wonderful time with friends. At one point there were 3 beds, 3 air mattresses and 2 couches occupied. Stepping over bodies to get to the kitchen to make morning coffee was joyful.

The river is finally frozen over. Pete "spud-ed" the ice. Using his iron bar he made holes every 10 feet across. Ice depth was consistently 6-8 inches. By the weekend we will have enough ice to move the huts out. I couldnt wait and set up 6 tip ups on New Years eve.

When the river is frozen, we see many neighbours and friends. A five minute walk across the ice takes at least 20 minutes to drive by car. Directly across the river, Henry's family built 2 beautiful snow men. They were in great spirits and we have much to catch up on. Pete and I went for a walk across to his sisters place and they had a houseful. I brought my guitar to sing them some christmas songs and we stayed for dinner.

I gave this medicine painting to a person who has been shut in for 20 years. Imagine, 20 years in the confinement of ones home. I wanted her to experience the outdoors from the comfort of her home. I wanted her to have this medicine, in hopes that it would brighten her day and lift her spirits. The call of the loon, the promise of the rainbow and the creators provisions are all gifts that are best shared. I hope this brings some peace and joy to Susan as she battles with confinement. Contentment of a Cat

Nin Minigos is an expert at sleeping. We have found him in a number of different places. He sleeps in garbage cans, boxes, pillows, night stands...you name it....and he sleeps a LOT. When he is not sleeping, he is playing full bore....flat out. He and Geddy begin the day around 5am charging up and down the hall, sliding on the floor and banging doors. Pete says it sounds like a stampede every morning. We bought new cat food which has little treats in it...wrong!!! They knock the food dish all over the bathroom floor and then hoover up all the treats. Bad kitty....but smart. Nin Minigos takes great joy in running faster than his speed, causing him to do burnouts and slides around corners. When the 2 of them get going there is no telling what will happen.

In the meantime, all my tests proved negative or should I say positive...I dont know. According to all tests I am healthy. My vision is blurred yet I scored 20/20 on the test. My ears are plugged and ringing and they are as clean as a whistle. My blood tests show that I am healthy with no bad markers. All response tests are fine. So then the doc says...it must be stress or reaction to the Codeine. The doc gave me some pills and a drink that is supposed to clear my system a bit better and quicker. Today I can concentrate better. That is welcome!

My condition was first diagnosed when I was around 14. At that time they thought it was scoliosis. Then with more tests, I was found to have spondylo lethesis. Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which a bone (vertebra) in the lower part of the spine slips out of the proper position onto the bone below it. I have two locations, which are now found to be arthritic. I lose the feelings in my hands often and that makes it hard to play guitar! I have never been able to find a med that agrees with me because I have a number of allergies. Muscle relaxants, anti inflammatorys, pain killers, mood enhancers...nothing has worked. I have learned instead to just deal with pain. I am not looking for sympathy! I ask for prayer and understanding instead.

I have been to a number of healing ceremonies, which have never helped anything physical, and I still go when opportunities arise. Last time the Pastor said..."what if you are not healed. How do you suppose you will feel about God." I decided at that moment that regardless of circumstance, Lord God was with me and in me. I just simply surrendered it all. I said Lord, you can have all that I am. This has not stopped my constant pain. It has however soothed my soul and given me joy beyond circumstance.

We read that Paul had a Thorn, but I am not sure what. I do know he lived with pain. I also know that in the face of death, Paul had joy beyond circumstance. I also read in prophesy that this pain that we all experience in one way or another, will be healed and every tear will be wiped from our eyes. I decided that although that may be true in the future, I could claim that today.

Lord God

there is so much suffering in this world.

As I look around me I see suffering much beyond my own.

I see broken lives and loss of hope.

I see trials and tribulations and a loss of faith.

I see pain grinding down our beings into shells of broken people.

I see addictions everywhere, all an attempt to hide or remove the pain.

Lord my pain is just physical and again I offer it all to you.

I pray Lord that you would spiritually heal all those suffering.

I pray for people of abuse and circumstance beyond their control.

I pray for all lost, hurt and lonely people.

I know Lord, that each and every person is a gift...

a sacred being and Lord I pray in solidarity.

I thank you Lord for how I am magnificently blessed

and how I can dwell in your presence

here, now and forever.

I am pleased to be your broken vessel.

I dont like the pain, but I sure love You.

I look forward to your symbolic birth celebration,

not for what I get

but for who You are

and why You came.

Please Pray for Me

A month ago my back went into spasm. After a couple weeks I couldnt stand the pain any more so I went to the Hospital. I was prescribed Tylenol3 with codeine. The pain went away, but I was left feeling nauseous. The spasm returned and I couldnt stand the pain so I took it again. Now the muscles is out of spasm, but I still feel sick. My eyesight is messed up and I am dizzy. I can only look at my computer screen for an hour and then I have to lie down. It has been very difficult to conduct business and I have been sleeping a lot. I noticed that my eyeglass prescription is now way out of whack and my ears are plugged. I will go back to the hospital today and try to get them to drain my ears. Perhaps that is what is causing me this imbalance. I feel sea sick and dizzy. Its been 10 years since I last took a pain killer. I am trying to figure out whats worse...the infliction or the cure? I am told my only "cure" is spinal fusion and that is no cure at all. I have decided that I MUST lose weight. I have dropped about 10 pounds now and hope to lose more. I cant help but imagine carrying around a 30 pound sack of butter on my back. It stands to reason that this extra weight is not helping me.

Many years ago we ran out of room in our old school house. We put all our pictures away for safe keeping. Debbie hung these for us. It is great to see the memories again.

I am connected to my office 5.5 hours south of me. When my phone rings in Mississauga, it rings on my desk. When I connect to the office with my PC, it is as if I was there. People are amazed and so am I.

Elder Alex left some ceremonial items with me for safe keeping. I jokingly said "I'll be taking pictures of myself the second you leave". Alex laughed and I wasnt kidding. A week has passed and I looked at that box every day. I debate and joke with myself. Finally today, I couldnt stand the temptation any more, so Niijii and I had a photo shoot.

The Eagle Feather is sacred to the Nishnaabe. In practice, Alex will pass the Eagle Feather, giving the beholder the absolute right and authority to speak. When someone speaks, we all must listen and respect. In a court of law, the Great Nishnaabe will swear on the Eagle Feather. The Holy Bible represents my belief in truth, just as the Nishnaabe reveres the Eagle Feather. To speak untruth with the Eagle Feather would be unspeakable. It is illegal for me to have an eagle feather, unless it is associated with religious practice. I also believe it would have to be a gift. In my travels, I am always on the lookout for an eagle feather. Perhaps some day, in the fullness of time, I will acquire one.

Dear Premier McGuinty,

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposal to remove the forest reserve status from parts of the Wolf Lake Forest Reserve. Forest reserve status is intended to make the area a park-in-waiting, with existing mining claims and leases being automatically designated as parks as soon as they lapse.

Wolf Lake, located along the Chiniguchi waterway in the southwestern region of Temagami, is home to the largest old-growth red pine forest in the world. Wolf Lake contains the core of 1,600 hectares of red pine with trees over 260 years old. This diverse ecosystem has thrived for centuries providing important habitat for wildlife and has now become a haven for hikers and canoeists. The towering pines found at Wolf Lake are part of an endangered ecosystem that is estimated to persist on only 1.2% of its former extent.

Removing the forest reserve status from part of the Wolf Lake region to encourage mining investment is a dangerous step to take in the "management" of this irreplaceable ecological gem. Under the proposed "general use" designation the old-growth forest would no longer be managed with protection of natural heritage and special landscapes as the priority, but rather with resource extraction as the primary goal.

The proposal would continue to allow damaging mining exploration activities, which could result in an operational mine, in the heart of this old-growth forest. Even commercial logging may be considered in Wolf Lake's old growth when it is required for advanced mineral exploration activities. Also, logging and mining exploration will be allowed in the southern Matagamasi Lake portion of the forest reserve.

The proposal takes this unique area further away from regulation as a permanently protected area - a designation that is long overdue. In doing so it leaves irreplaceable ecosystems and prime canoe routes in peril from industry and badly managed recreation.

The Wolf Lake old-growth forest, including substantial buffer zones on all sides, should be fully and permanently protected - under no circumstances should industrial activities be allowed to proceed in Canada’s largest old-growth red pine forest. Breaking up this landscape in a patchwork of land-use designations threatens to degrade its ecological and recreational value. This area should be permanently protected as part of a continuous corridor that includes the entire Wolf Lake Forest Reserve, all of Chiniguchi Lake, and the associated red and white pine forests. I will be watching this issue closely and plan to take further action if this misguided proposal proceeds as is. I hope to count on the Ministry of Natural Resources to do the right thing.

I would invite, ask, and encourage each and every reader to sign this petition. As you may or may not be aware, the provincial government has decided to abandon protection of this significant forest. My personal opinion is that all remaining old growth should be saved and protected. Look at the stats...there is so little left. We need to be good stewards of the land and protect this. Generations are counting on us.

Two weeks ago when I returned from Mississauga, My back went into spasm. I did what I usually do. I wait it out and sleep a bit more. Well last night was brutal and I was going crazy with the pain. I decided to go to emerg first thing. Pete dropped me off at 8am and by 9am I was out with a prescription for Tylenol 3. I took a few and wow..they work. I feel so great! Not because I'm buzzed, but because I feel like a veil of gloom has been lifted. Pain can make you slave.

Sue was told the sad news last week that her work term was not 6 weeks as hoped, but cut short to 2 weeks. That was bad. This week, they asked if she would like to work full time. This is Good! Sue wanted to be part of a team and she found a great place to work and love children. This is Sues calling. This is good.

The Almighty said there was only one God. We needed a name. The Almighty could not be contained in a name, nor would any name suffice. For a long time, the Name was so holy, feared and revered that it could not be spoken. No name could do justice. As man does, a name can become a symbol or an idol and quite possibly a replacement for the real thing. Yet man needed to have a name, just as we required an earthly king.

Moses broke the ice and got up enough courage to ask the un askable....What is Your name? Moses was told, I AM that I AM.....I AM who I AM....I IS what I IS. Was that a "never mind"? or was that a clue.

So man proceeded to try to find a name for the un-nameable.

The name list is big. It contains so many adjectives, nouns, pronouns, verbs....all are used to try to capture the essence of God. As I ponder my personal name of God, I realize its not a name, its an all powerful feeling. My name for God within can not be spoken, for not one name is worthy....YET I lovingly, respectfully, joyfully and faithfully honor and speak all these names.

I am told that there is no other name by which I am saved, and that name is Jesus. I read that Jesus is God. I would suggest that it is not the name that saves, but the Almighty. Jesus, the Christ made it possible for me to experience the living God, here today, yesterday and tomorrow. I guess I am a bit like Thomas and just needed to see the the holes in his hands; holes through which I can experience the creator and God within.

The blog post comment said: ****** is a "wanna be" Indian. While I understood why this fellow was being called a wanna be, I couldnt help but identify myself in the statement. What made him a wanna be and what makes me accepted?....or am I just fooling myself?

I am proud and honored to be a wanna be Indian. While clearly I am of scottish decent, I cant help identifying myself with the "native". I am not entirely certain why I feel "native", or why I identify so strongly, other than "it is what it is" and thats how I feel inside.

I just received a copy of "Norval Morrisseau Exhibition - Honouring First Nations - May 7 - 31, 1994" , and on page 7, Mr Robinson recounts a story.

Norval once said, "These paintings remind you that you're an Indian. We are all Indians. It's not your fault you were born with a certain skin colour. Somewhere inside, we are all Indians. I'm trying to bring out the best Indian-ness in you to make you realize everything is sacred in the world"

My own art statement reads:

" While I am not Anishnaabe I am a Canadian whose heart beats in unison with our First Nation peoples. We are all in Spirit. My artwork is a manifestation of the vision of Norval Morrisseau, the founder of Anishnaabe art, who desired to bring out the Indian-ness hiding within each of us."

I believe there are dna strands within my body, reminding me and compelling me to be "Indian". Those powerful reminders inside take me to past places, and also provide for me a certainty of future, like instinct. I am constantly reminded of this native side. Attached on the same strand are my feelings towards clans, fishing, scotch and the ocean breeze. When I close my eyes, Its like I am there, retrieving my nets, smelling the peat. Right next to that strand, is the strand reminding me of my time singing praises to the Lord in King Davids temple. I didnt play guitar back then..haha.

My blueprint of life was God breathed and is sacred. God breathed "Ruach" into my dry bones, just as Gitchie Manido breathed breathe of life through the Magis Shell. Its the same story, reverberating through history.

While this may seem silly to the seasoned "Indian", I am still very excited for my wife to make me my first buckskin jacket. I am excited about beaver skin gloves, snowshoes and the heartbeat of Mother Earth. I am cherishing my friendship with native mentors, just as I cherish life itself. Indeed, everything is sacred in the world....and why not?...It was magnificently created!

I am proud to be a wanna be Indian.

My daughter corrected me. I said "good" and she corrected me with "well". I'm sorry, but "well" doesnt cut it.

Stuff is a word we are not to use. I love doing stuff and saying stuff. I make my english teacher cringe because I actually like spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes and incorrect usage of words.

A couple of days of snow. There see, I did it again. What kind of sentence is that? hahah Well, I am the editor of this magazine, so a couple of days of snow it is! The snow plow just came by. We have a beautiful blanket of fresh, white snow. The river is still open and we think it will be a couple weeks before we see ice.

Niijii is in the window eating from the Patti Rainbow bird feeder. He loves that spot.....it overlooks the river. It is quite remarkable, that Niijii has never crashed into a window. He just understands his physical boundaries. Hahaha, the other day he had his head buried in the feeder and I went up to him and touched his butt. He freaked, and fell off the bird feeder and landed in the plant below. He swore and cheeped at me and I had to untangle him from the fern.

I went to a Norval Morrisseau retrospective at Kinsman Robinson gallery and I must say these simple, little pieces spoke volumes. I had the good fortune of having a personal tour with John and Paul. After the showing, I caught up with Ritchie and we had a great opportunity to discuss the show. I was blown away by some of the insights. I feel like a person of privilege.

Pete cooked moose last night and I made the smashed potatoes. We had dinner ready for Sue's return from work. I just thought I'd throw that in for all you food lovers. I didnt bother taking a picture. As you can tell, I like talking about food. That reminds me.....what shall I cook tonight?hhhmmm. Actually, I have half a smoked pike in the fridge. ya thats it. I'll cook pasta and make a sauce with pike in it...ya, like a seafood sauce. It will be like a "tuna helper" meal except with real ingredients.

Stuff about stuff.....Niijii said "you're just a budgie bird" and here I thought I was the king of my castle.

I was sent a link from a friend. Like a fool, I followed it and I have paid the consequences. Immediately every one of my contacts was sent an email with the same link. I have had to contact all my contacts and warn them, I have had to delete my email address patienceandselfcontrol@hotmail.com and I have had to change all my passwords on all my sites. I feel like I have been raped. This email address, though rarely used, has great sentimental value. By the way, patience and self control are attributes that I have been trying to work on. I identified these fruits were lacking in my life and I have been trying to re-train or re-identify these gifts in their proper form. The email addy was a reminder to me that I didnt completely have my shit together. Anyway, I guess it was time to let that go. I am momentarily sad, yet life begins a new, the sun rises and its a brand new day.

TURTLE ISLAND COMMANDMENTS

This is wisdom literature. This is divine commandment. It is God breathed reality. We have the opportunity each and every day to either live by, or against this wisdom. With choice comes responsibility. We have to live with and by our actions and reactions. Sometimes living these commandments is tough. Sometimes we have to say or do things we do not want. Sometimes external influences like fear can inhibit our ability to flow. When these tenants are acccepted deep within, it becomes much easier. Reactions to situations can be more in tune with spirit flow and vibration. As a christian, I was encouraged to pray within Gods will. When I was born again, I had an internal encouragement to LIVE in Gods will. I have learned that it would be better to die physically, than to die spiritually. I have come to believe that Gods love and spirit is fluid in this world and that I can be a part of this divine flow and experience Gods kingdom here on earth. This spiritual kingdom can never be shaken. Despite hardship and desert experiences, the spirit provides hope, joy and purpose. Better is one day in this kingdom, than thousands elsewhere! Praise God!

Boreal Birch Syrup

I was talking to John at the Norval Morrisseau Retrospective, and he asked me if I had ever heard of Boreal Birch Syrup. I had never heard about this type of syrup. John says that its a really nice syrup and especially nice on trout. The taste was described to be like Maple Syrup with a little bit of Soya sauce. So now I am intrigued.

Ratio of sap to syrup can be 100:1......100 litres of sap for 1 litre of syrup. I am envisioning how many pails of sap I must carry through the bush, in order to have enough syrup for my fish smoker and pancakes for a year.

I must ask elder Mathias if and how the ancestors collected from the birch. He has told me stories of Maple Syrup collection. Because there are not many Maples on Misabi land, they would "migrate" or gather by invitation to other family lands. Many seasonal gatherings would take place in rotation, as each family would share what their land had to offer. Ultimately, each family was responsible for the well being and continued health of their land. These factors were taken into consideration when deciding where the next "gathering" would be.

I have come to learn......there is so much to learn!

So why are these here? Do they have some deep meaning? Are they a clue for passing strangers? Alex said "picture a hunter, camped on this island, waiting for the ice to melt, so he can continue his journey. He passes the time making art, and chipping in stone." There were many types of rock on this island. Perhaps some rocks are "stronger" than others. Perhaps our artist used the very stones at our feet. Or perhaps this hunter carried with him, his tool. Maybe he used a piece of flint rock, traded with a brother from the north for a beaver pelt.

And the images.....obviously there were animals and birds and some unrecognizable images due to aging and time or even due to our own misunderstanding. Its no secret that I am a sensitive to the thunderbird. I couldnt help but feel thunderbird and ancestors themes. My overall impression is that the artist was depicting the world as he knew. These were things that blessed him and were worthy of his creativity. Perhaps in gratitide, or reverence, or joy.

These ancient carvings are chipped in stone, moss covered, created, lost and found again. Who knows how long they have weathered time and nature. Who knows how many people have been blessed by this artists work.

Art like this can be found in various forms all over the north. This is hardcore evidence that Columbus was a sham....a very bad map reader. He never never found the new world, because the new world is actually very old.....and was never lost.

Lion Queen's Cave??

EVERY INDIAN TRIBE HAS AN ORIGIN LEGEND BASED ON THEIR FIRST APPEARANCE ON EARTH. THE TEMAGAMI CLAIM THAT FAR BACK IN THE MISTS OF TIME, THEIR ANCESTORS SPRANG FROM A CAVE LOCATED IN THE SMOOTHWATER LAKE AREA.

He had his bow and arrow with him, and as he went along he saw a great snake. He shot it with his arrow. (The big snake became a high rocky ridge on the protage south of Soothwater lake). He came to a big lake with a nice, sandy shore, where he saw Lions (mici'bizi'w "giant Lynx"). He couldn't shoot them with his arrowas they were too far away, nor was there any place where he could hide himself until they came to sun themselves by the shore, when they felt too cold in the water. Finally he hit upon a plan. He took some birch bark from a rotten stump , rolled it into a hollow cylinder , and placed it, like a wigam, near the shore. He got inside and made a little hole in the bark through which to shoot and kill the Lions.
When the Lions saw the thing on the beach they grew curious to find out what this strange thing was on the beach that was not there the day before. So they sent a big snake to twist around it and try to upset it, but the snake did not succeed in doing this, for Nenebuc stood too firm. So the Lions came ashore upon the sand and Nenebuc shot of them with his arrow - a she-lion, the wife of the Lion Chief. He did not kill her, but wounded her badly in the side, and the flint arrow point stayed in the wound. She was very badly wounded and went back to a hole which led to a cave in a big rock where she lived. Nenebuc was sorry that he had not killed the Lion queen.

I Just wanted to let you know that the OPP emergency response team and helicoptor were searching this afternoon, and will resume again tomorrow. The OPP asked us to post a missing person and communicate to others who could spread the word. They will be checking with local food/outback stores to see if Daniel stopped to

buy supplies. Feel free to share with whatever contacts you may have, he's out there somewhere, with the help of

many we are hopeful he will be found.

Our son is missing since Thurs. Nov. 3, 2011, believed to be in Temagami outback, car spotted on Red Squirrel Rd.

Lost Languages

On a journey with Alex, he told me he was beginning to fear the loss of his language. He told me about some things he has done and things he was considering. He shared some high points of hope and some low points of frustration.

Languages are being lost all over the world at a rapid rate. One could sit and debate the pros and cons and all the reasons why or why not, this should be. The next obvious question is how much do we try to save languages and what becomes of our lost languages.

For me, its not the lost language thats the issue, but the broader cultural context. This language was interwoven with a way of life. As I spend time with these elders, I realize the importance of the knowledge they have. I wish that when Europeans came to this country, they didnt see it as a place to own and conquer. I wish that our relations would have been ones based on equality, friendship and trust.

When I look at the conquest, what was lost, what was gained, I cant help but feel a certain shame. Now here I am, enjoying the company of 2 iconic men. I can see what we are losing. I can quickly learn and assimilate, but really in the end there is loss.

I wish that the Canadian government would identify key important elders and hire them to tell their story and teach the language and pass the knowledge. I understand that a wampum belt is in effect between our peoples, but this would be over and above. This passing of the knowledge is for all of us.

Alex has been sharing the language with me. It is a beautiful language. The word for "window" is translated as "place where light comes in". I try to remember the words, but sadly this 50 year old brain cant. I told Alex that I could dedicate my life to learning the language, but really, that would only buy another 10 years or so and would pass with me, and as I said, the language is just the tip of the iceberg. I am not the answer, I am only a witness.

My wife just called me from her interview. They love her and have offered her a 6 week contract. She is impressed with the operation and excited for a chance to be with a team. This is such a blessing for us. It has been hard for us on single income, however it has also helped us to prioritize and focus on giving and getting from the land and community. These hardship things have been a blessing and employment for my wife feels like Extravagant Love! I look now and see how this is part of the flow. Yesterday at this time, this opportunity had not materialized, it was preparing itself for glorious revelation. I am going to count this as an Extravagant Love Blessing. I feel like singing.

The phone rang and it was elder Alex. He was in town after a 2 week visit to Toronto and was looking for a lift home a couple hours north. Without hesitation I said no problem. I wasnt thinking about the 5 hour commitment, because all I could envision was the joy of the journey. As it turns out, it was a magnificent adventure. I cant even begin to count the blessings!

I am telling you right here and right now that a journey based on love and respect is blessed 10 fold. A journey based on trust in the divine, allows one to go with the flow, and extravagant love is experienced. Extravagant love is above and beyond "call of duty" love. With extravagant love, there is no end and there is no hesitation. A beautiful line is drawn on the canvas of life, and it flows, guided not by the hand, but by divine order.

I have been considering dividing my blog between two sites. I have been considering a new blogspot for my art. I would continue to discuss art as it relates to my life, however, I have been considering a place to locate my own art and thoughts as it relates to my art.

I did say that art is like life and life is like art and so for that purpose, the two should remain together. This is why I will continue to discuss art matters on keepupwithdon. However, I also needed a place to direct potential clients to view my art. I have been struggling with how best to do that. I have been watching a number of other artists as they have been making these decisions in differant ways.

Fall Blessings

These are four of my favourite people. We had the honor of hosting Debs friends as they embarked on magnificent journeys. T and N were heading out to New Brunswick to begin a new chapter in life, and My daughter D and her friend R were heading out for a one month cross North America trip.

D and R heading out with Cali on their minds, a convertable, and full bank accounts.

We heard from them from various points across Canada and they made it to the west coast.

Last I heard, they were in Portland Oregon.

We are on a constant search for firewood. We scored some at Aunt T's cottage.

Double blessing as they have been needing to clean up, and we have insatiable appetites for wood.

If I keep the home fire burning, the oil furnace doesnt kick on.

Sue finally processed the last of the pumpkins. We have a number of frozen pies and loafs in the freezer, and we have been eating lots of pumpkin seeds!

Sue went out yesterday and picked the last of the brocolli and colrabi. She then made an awesome dip and served it with Pita. Late season brocolli is really good. Our Kale is still growing despite the heavy frosts and we hope for at least one more feed. When I build the greenhouse, that will significantly extend the growing season.

I took some trout out of the freezer and thawed it out. When I opened the package, I realized that we had left the skin on and that we had intended to smoke these. Since the trout was thawed, I made a brine and let the fish soak for another 24 hours. In the meantime, I got to work on a smokehouse.

The bottom box has a propane burner with a pot of woodchips/shavings and barks that we save from our firewood processing. The burner causes the wood to smoke. I intend to use a smaller burner and put racks in side the box. I want to also explore using wood rather than Propane.

I cut a hole in the top of the box, and built a stone oven on top of the box. I put my pepper seasoned fish on a small grill and put it in the stone smoke oven for 4 hours. I put some homemade maple syrup on top of the fish at hour 2. When it came off the grill, we feasted on the best smoked trout I have ever eatin! I s**t you not...THE BEST!

Natural Free Range Chicken Flavor - Natural Beef Tenderloin Flavor

I know what these words imply, but is that actually what it says?

What does that mean...truly, without double speak.

I myself prefer to eat free range chicken over commercial chicken but I'm not sure I could really taste the difference, truth be known.

As for Beef Tenderloin, I have never been a big fan. I prefer something like All Natural Medium Rare T-Bone Steak Flavor.

I made my wife a tuna sandwich for lunch at work. It was really nice tuna! It was a white Albacore and she said it was the best. Yet everyone knows that YellowFin Tuna is THE tuna to serve when trying to impress someone!

My granny used to tell me that Atlantic Salmon from the North Sea was the best. Meanwhile, BC Pacific Salmon has become increasingly popular. That deep red flesh...mmm so good! But wait a minute, I now understand that there is some nasty fish farming going on out there and the flavor and goodness of these fish is questionable. Of course the answer lies up the coast, where Wild Alaskan Salmon still abounds. Everyone knows that the Alaskan Wild Salmon is better because its colder, more remote, more prisitne, more......flavorful. But wait a minute. It doesnt say natural. Jeesh now I'm confused.

Picking an appropriate kitty treat has become a very difficult, yet rewarding venture.

I have been living vicariously through my Cats excesses. He is so flippin spoilled...he knows and he doesnt care. I am supposed to just live with it. We have tried all these wonderful flavors and frankly considered serving some to our guests as fancy little appetizers.

Here is my "Pic" of the day. I have been to see the amazing collection of Lawren Harris paintings over at the AGO. Seeing these paintings up close and personal is a real thrill.

It is amazing to see the artists progression. Lawren's first pieces are smaller and are more fine art. There were many town scenes and buildings. Lawrens art then begins to "morph" and become more spiritual representative of the subject or object.

The above artwork Pic Island shows a real peace, beauty and majesty. I can feel and sense the same spirit attributes as found in Ojibwa Medicine art.

Subjects and objects can be fully explored by the imagination, when lines and colors are reduced. Its like Lawren has stripped out the fine art or photographic art, and replaced with the essence. I dont think this painting is meant to show us Pic Island, rather, it was likely painted to help us experience and feel the beauty and majesty of Pic Island. Now I wonder if Pic Island really exists.....or does it now matter?

By the way, I wont be adding this painting to my collection given that its likely worth over a million bucks! I do however have a small art print from the McMichael Conservation Collection.

I wanted it then and I want it now. I still love this piece. I would drop by the Greenery Florist website every few months to see if it was still there. I always felt like there was a miniature drum roll going off in my head as I searched the site for the painting. Every time I saw it was still there, I would tell myself...you wont be so lucky next time! So now its been almost 2 years and truly I felt that if I was ever going to have this piece in my collection, I would have to act. I decided to start the process right away. The owner of Greenery was kind enough to help me with a plan and within a few months, this painting will be on my wall. I am very excited as this is an important part of my collection. I have great respect and admiration for Jim and I really dig his art. I have a perfect place in my office for this piece.

Here is a picture of "Single Mom" at an art show in Vancouver.

Art is so cool and I love each and every painting/print I own and have purchased these pieces, not for their monetary value, but for how they make me feel and how they fit into this grand journey. While in my mind I know this all has value, I despair the thought of realizing that value and then parting with my collection.

Some day, I am going to rent the Art Gallery of Sturgeon Falls and share all my paintings with my community. I feel like a king and blessed beyond measure.

I closed the door to Niijii's room and went to bed. Trouble is, it didnt lock and Geddy the cat pryed the door open. He often does that. I know he has broken in because my feather collection re-appears all over the house. In this case, Geddy removed my grouse fans from the chair overlooking Niijii's swing. When I peeked in this morning there he was, sitting on the chair and watching Niijii with drooling eyes.

I am fairly confident that nothing would happen, as Geddy often removes himself from situations like this. If Budgie gets too close, he will often flee, for fear of his own reaction. He knows Niijii is a pet and untouchable, yet he is so darned interested. He just stares with longing eyes.......strategically meal planning.

The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. ²¹ I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!”

I was doing a little surfing this morning and came across this passage on a fellow bloggers post. It was a revelation moment for him.

In my opinion, the new Christian Law is a parallel to the old Judaic Law. While it is useful for instruction in righteousness, it is not righteousness. It becomes merde when used to divide creation and to draw lines. It shifts our focus from a God who dwells within, to a God who has expectations for rule following. Christ, The God Child, fully God and fully man, dwells in me and I in Him by the very faith breathed in me. I have deep love and gratitude for this union and I AM FREE!

I have trouble with some of my christian brothers and sisters because they are busy making camps by which they can be identified. They are busy building one way bridges and putting up fences and drawing lines. They are worshiping the law and tradition and idols of every sort, while becoming increasingly insulated they are so heavenly minded, they are no earthly good.

When Christ divided the loaves and fed the people he told them about the bread of life. They couldn't believe that it was free.......we still cant.

Road to Camp

This is "HWY" 805. Camp is about 40KM north. Last town was River Valley and that is the postal address for these parts. No electricity..no cell service, but there are a lot of great radio stations!

Red and White Pine

This Red and White Pine appear to grow from the same trunk. Alex pointed them out to me. I stopped the truck, took a picture and looked closer. These 2 trees merge as one, although clearly they began as seperate seedlings. The Red Pine is flourishing and the White Pine is beginning to die. The woodpeckers have been having a feast in her bark.

Camp

This is my school bus and newly acquired shed. I got a call that the shed and platform were to be disposed of, so I raced to camp to spec it out. The shed is a bit rough and needs a few repairs, but the platform was good. We managed to put it in place and I spent the day building the crib and foundation. I do plan on building a bunkie for Sue and I on that foundation. We will have a double bed and a woodstove.

One of the neighbors gave me a hand and gave me a couple of railroad ties. When I picked the wood up he said it would cost me. I said how much and he said "just a thankyou" so I said Merci! and later he came to admire my work and give me crap for not calling him for more help when I needed it. I gave him the rest of my carrots and he was thrilled. Fresh Veggies in the bush are a welcome thing.

I have been collecting special pieces of driftwood during my travels in the bush. I have dozens of unique pieces, and each one tells a story to me. I look at the grains and the knots and I begin to see likeness and life force. Sure this is just a piece of wood...but who knows how old it is? Who knows how long it swirled in that eddy. Who knows how many rocks and other pieces it brushed against. Who knows how tall it once stood, or how long it lived. Who knows how many animals sought refuge under its canopy. Who knows how many birds built nests in that tree. Who knows where it stood and the beauty it beholded?

So the question is why am I now going to explore and marvel, create and paint on each and every one of these little pieces of driftwood? To what end?.......For what purpose?

The answer is simple. For the grand celebration! I want to accentuate the natural beauty and lines and force of each piece of driftwood, so that I may join in the praises of creation and ultimately the creator. There is so much natural beauty around us, I want these little pieces of art to stand as little testaments to the wondrous glory and inherent beauty of the natural world. I want to help create whimsical and childlike joy, while paying tribute to the sacredness and beauty of Gods provisions for us.

A few hundred years ago,

a blessed seed did sprout

and from that seed

grew a magnificent tree.

That tree gave sustenance

to birds and animals

and insects and plants

and provided the very air we breath.

That tree eventually died,

as all do,

and lay transforming

on the side of that river.

One spring thaw,

life giving water washed that tree into the river,

where it began its decent

and continued transformation.

A small piece broke off,

around and around in a circle,

it was molded to perfection

to tell the story,
to reveal the glory.

It was specially selected,

by a wandering soul,

The Moose

The moose is a magnificent creature! It is big and bold, yet it can seem passive and peaceful. The moose is a vegetarian and loves water greens and tender shoots. The moose can be seen every spring at thaw along the side of our northern highways.

I was talking about Ojibway translations with an elder. I learned that "window" translates to place where light comes in. There was no name for "horse", as horses had never been seen. The ojibway translation for horse is "solid hoof animal". The moose, and the deer are split hooved animals. The first sign of the horse was likely a hoof print..imagine their surprise!

While walking in the bush, one is continually reminded of the moose....they leave their droppings everywhere! I have seen them at the peaks of hills and in swampy valleys. They are numerous and roam the woodlands with majesty.

This is my tribute to the moose and this is a gift for a very nice couple we met.

My wife Sue put herself through university as an Erin Craft Co-op stained glass apprentice to the remarkably talented Patti Rainbow Wheeler. Sue watched the store while piecing together patterns precut and designed by Patti. I watched and sometimes helped. I designed, cut, and wrapped this piece, but when it came time to soldering it, I really needed my wife. Sue became quite proficient at the solder and the bead. This piece is called sunrise and we made this together as newlyweds.
